The Crisis

Why Water & Sanitation Cannot Wait

Afghanistan faces one of the world’s most severe clean water crises. Unsafe water and poor sanitation fuel disease, drive girls out of school, and keep communities trapped in poverty. ASHAO is here to change that.

1
Over 16 Million at Risk

More than 16 million Afghans do not have reliable access to clean drinking water, forcing families — often women and girls — to walk hours every day to find water.

1
Dignity & Safety for Women and Girls

The absence of private latrines and sanitation facilities forces women and girls into dangerous situations. ASHAO's gender-sensitive sanitation approach restores dignity and protects their safety.

1
Children Bear the Heaviest Burden

Waterborne diseases remain a leading cause of death for Afghan children under five. Diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid are preventable — but only with safe water and proper sanitation.

You Can Be the Reason Someone Has Clean Water Today

Whether you donate, volunteer, or spread the word — every action matters. Choose how you want to make an impact.

Donate to Safe Water

As little as $25 can provide clean water access to a family for a year. Your donation directly funds well drilling, pump installation, and water quality testing in the most vulnerable villages.

Join Our Hygiene Campaign

Become a WASH advocate. Share our mission on social media, organise a fundraiser in your community, or help us reach new donors. Together we can amplify the voices of Afghan families.

Sponsor a Water Project

Fund a complete water point or latrine block for a school or clinic. Receive project updates, photos, and a full impact report. Name a water point in memory or honour of a loved one.

Water Sustainability for a Healthier Tomorrow

Ensuring Clean, Safe, and Sustainable Water Access for Every Community

Water is life. Yet, thousands of families across vulnerable communities struggle daily to access clean and safe drinking water. Water scarcity, contamination, and poor sanitation continue to threaten health, education, and livelihoods. For many households, especially in rural and underserved areas, women and children walk long distances every day just to collect water that is often unsafe for consumption.

The lack of reliable water sources increases the spread of waterborne diseases, weakens community resilience, and limits economic opportunities. Children miss school due to illness, families spend scarce income on medical treatment, and agricultural productivity declines because of unreliable water supply. Over time, these challenges deepen poverty and hinder sustainable development.

WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene)

Clean Water. Safe Sanitation. Healthy Communities.

Access to safe water and proper hygiene is not a luxury — it is a basic human right. Through our WASH program, ASHAO delivers sustainable water systems, improved sanitation facilities, and life-saving hygiene awareness to vulnerable communities.

Our interventions include:

  • Construction of deep wells and solar-powered water systems

  • Installation of water supply networks and safe storage tanks

  • Emergency water support during shortages

  • Water quality testing and monitoring

  • Hygiene promotion in schools and communities

In partnership with A Step for Humanity Welfare Foundation Denmark, we ensure continuous WASH services for communities affected by war and drought — protecting health, preserving dignity, and preventing infectious diseases.

Together, we are building resilient communities where clean water flows, sanitation is safe, and every family can live with dignity.
